Complex Molecular Systems graduate program

Requirements and procedures of MSc program

Introduction
The Graduate Program Complex Molecular Systems offers talented MSc and PhD students a challenging interdisciplinary program aiming at a career in research, in combination with a strong focused background in one of the TU/e departments. It is organized by the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems, Eindhoven University of Technology. This interdisciplinary institute for research and education in the area of molecular complexity formally started April 1, 2008. The institute aims to create complex, functional objects based on novel engineering tools and state-of-the-art modeling. ICMS brings excellent researchers from different areas and departments together to promote cross-fertilization of ideas across departments and across disciplines. We focus on applications in the area of sustainability, energy efficiency, soft biomaterials and functional materials. The combination of expertise in chemistry and biology, engineering, and theory and physics is unique in the Netherlands and guarantees fundamental understanding as well as application in functional systems.
In this pamphlet an overview of the requirements and procedures for the MSc program Complex Molecular Systems is given. If you like to know more about the contents of the program, have a look at www.icms.tue.nl or contact us to receive the brochure.

The Master program
Each student will follow an MSc degree program in one of the TU/e departments. The Complex Molecular Systems MSc program is an additional program (certificate program) and consists of a study load of 30 credit points (cp) to be completed during the two year MSc degree program:

  • 15 cp Five courses (each 3 cp) fundaments of complexity (see list of courses)
  • 10 cp Rotation: a research project which involves several complementary research groups. The rotation gives insight in the chain: theory – modeling – synthesis – engineering
  • 5 cp   Scientific skills

In addition to the 30 cp study program students need to perform their undergraduate project with one of the staff members of ICMS (see website for an overview of ICMS staff members). MSc students participating in the Graduate Program can continue within the PhD program after successful completion of the MSc program.

Admission and registration for the MSc program
Only highly motivated and talented students will be admitted to participate in the program. A personal interview will be part of the selection procedure. The selection will be based on:

  •  Grades in the BSc phase (minimum average 8 of 10)
  •  Demonstrated multidisciplinary interest
  •  Ambition to follow a PhD program after completion of the Master
  •  Excellent communication skills and fluency in spoken and written English
  •  Successful admission to a TU/e Master degree program in one of the following departments: Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science

To apply for this Master program, please send us a motivation letter, your Curriculum Vitae and a list with grades of your BSc degree. After first selection you will be invited for a personal interview with the selection committee. The program starts each year in September and February, so contact us in time.
After being accepted for a TU/e Master degree program, and having passed the selection procedure you can register as a certificate student Complex Molecular Systems by filing in the registration form that is available at the student administration of BME.  José Janssen is the ICMS contact person at the student administration BME and will take care of the further registration process.

Participating in the Master program
After being admitted to the program and having registered as certificate student, your study program has to be designed. One of the ICMS staff members needs be your (second) undergraduate project supervisor within the department. This ICMS staff member will help you in choosing the relevant courses and if needed the rotation. Five courses have to be chosen out of the list with preferred courses (see website). This study program has to be submitted via the study program form to the ICMS program coordinator (Sagitta Peters MSc) and after approval by the exam committee you are ready to start.

Finishing the Master program
After having completed all courses, the rotation and scientific skills, you are in charge! Contact José Janssen at the student administration of BME and let her know that you have finished your individual study program. She will now forward your results to the ICMS coordinator. After the coordinator has checked your results with the study program as was decided upon at start, it will be forwarded to the exam committee for official approval. If successful, the student administration will ask STU (TU/e Education and Student Service Center) to prepare the certificate. Please do this all in time, as the certificate will be presented to you during your degree diploma ceremony of the department.
