Biography
Jaap Schouten is full professor in Chemical Reactor Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) since 1998. He is head of the laboratory of Chemical Reactor Engineering. He received his Ph.D. (cum laude) in 1988 from the Delft University of Technology. In 1988 he joined the Detergents Group, section Washing Processes and Machines, at the Unilever Research Laboratory in Vlaardingen. He worked at the Delft University of Technology in the Department of Chemical Process Technology from 1990 to 1998, since 1994 as associate professor.
From 2001 to 2005 Jaap Schouten was member of the Board and Vice-Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at TU/e. In November 2008 he was again appointed Board member and Vice-Dean. From 2004 to 2008 he was Secretary of the Working Party on Chemical Reaction Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE); in 2009 he became the Working Party's chairman. He is member of the Scientific Committees of the International Symposia on Chemical Reaction Engineering (ISCRE) and Microreaction Technology (IMRET), and of the European Process Intensification Conference (EPIC). He is Chair of ISCRE-22 that will be organized in Maastricht in 2012.
Since 2001 Jaap Schouten is member of the Hoogewerff Foundation for Process Technology in the Netherlands (Stichting Hoogewerff-Fonds), since 2006 acting as Chairman. In 2006 he was granted the prestigious "Simon Stevin Meester" award by the Dutch Technology Foundation (STW). Also in 2006 he obtained a prestigious TOP grant from the Division of Chemical Sciences (CW) of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). In the same year he received the Chemistry Innovation KTN Award for Innovation in Applied Catalysis and Colloid Science from the British Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). In 2007 he was appointed Member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences (Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen). In the same year he became member of the Board of the NWO Division of Chemical Sciences. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
