The anniversary of the university is called Dies Natalis (Latin for 'birthday'). But can you say a university is really 'born'? 'Creation' would a better description. And what day should we regard as foundation day? In the history of the TU/e, three dates are establishing milestones:
- On June 7, 1956, Queen Juliana signs the Revised Law on the Technical Higher Education, which the Technical University Eindhoven (THE) is listed as the second institute, next to Delft.
- On June 23, 1956 the law is entered into force and the Board of Curators of the brand new THE are sworn in by the Minister of Education, Culture and Science.
- On September 19, 1957, Her Majesty opens at a festive session of THE and the first school year starts.
In 1960, Rector Prof. H. Dorgelo decided that June 23rd is the official Dies Natalis. The birth year of the university is 1956.
Speeches
The TU/e celebrates Dies Natalis as an academic ceremony, where the Rector or his deputy speeches. Later on in the festivities, other professors are invited to speech as well. The ceremony also hosts a musical program while dignitaries (academic and industrial relations of the university) get a place on the front row. Each year an honorary doctorate will be conferred.
