ILI’s mission is to search for revolutionary lighting solutions. It does this using an interdisciplinary approach that takes society as its laboratory. Well-being and sustainability are given top priority in all facets of its research and resonate throughout all of the strategic programs.
Four Lines of Research
The lines of lighting research at ILI have been created to address concrete issues faced by society. This approach is also known as ‘design for need’. Three of the institute four research programs tackle practical matters:
- Road Lighting 2015: to develop intelligent street lighting
- No Switches Allowed: to develop new technical interfaces between humans and light
- Sound Lighting: to develop lighting systems for reliable, sustainable living and work environment
The institute also values the role of creativity in devising innovative lighting solutions. That is why the fourth program:
- Open Light is devoted to exploring limitless possibilities: ‘design for opportunity’
