"The basis for developing an intelligent lighting system"

“The research we are performing at the moment will form the basis for developing an intelligent lighting system. At a later stage, we will be testing live-action scenarios together with road users. We are looking for the best compromise between energy savings, safety, and aesthetic value.”

Gerrit Kroesen
Thought Leader Road Lighting 2015

The researchers in the Road Lighting 2015 research program face a considerable challenge: to develop ‘intelligent’ street lamps that drastically reduce overall energy use, while simultaneously increasing people’s sense of security on the streets – without polluting the streetscape.

  • Objective: to develop more energy-efficient intelligent street lighting systems without sacrificing the users’ sense of security or polluting the streetscape
  • Program Manager: Marco Haverlag, Professor of Physics of Gas-discharge Lamps
  • Thought Leader: Gerrit Kroesen, Professor of Experimental Plasma Physics
  • Partners: Cofely, NXP, Philips Lighting and various small business partners
