Institute for Complex Molecular Systems

For Public and Press

ICMS – Who we are
Looking to nature as a model, TU/e scientists and engineers from the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology are joining forces in the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS). They will be investigating the exact mechanism behind self-organization, the principle behind all life on earth. Researchers plan to use this knowledge to build molecular mini-factories that could produce the next generation of catalysts, photosynthetic systems, nanocontainers and functional materials.

Study center
The institute itself is establishing an Advanced Study Center on the topic of complexity. It is hoped that lively discussion will produce unorthodox technological solutions to the challenges facing society. In fact, it is precisely at times when specialists from different backgrounds work together that breakthroughs happen.

Animation studio
The center will also be setting up an animation studio to document the world of complex molecular systems in dynamic moving images, allowing a much better understanding of this complex material.

At the moment, the institute is heavily involved in the organization of a new NEMO exhibition on "Looking for life."

Presentations
During a university wide lecture on August 27, 2008 Bert Meijer presented the ICMS lecture ‘Waarom we geen leven kunnen maken\' (Why we can\'t make life). This is a popular scientific presentation which explains the relation between the origin of life and complexity. We are very proud that Bert Meijer also presented this lecture at Lowlands University (August 2009). Please contact us if you would like to learn more about this presentation.
