Publication in PRL on Domain Wall Resistance

  • 24 januari 2012

FNA PhD student Jeroen Franken en master student Mark Hoeijmakers report their work "Tunable resistivity of individual magnetic domain walls" in the latest issue of Physical Review Letters!

The report describes carefully designed experiments to measure the resistance of individual magnetic domain walls, while imaging in real time the appearance of these domain walls in a microscope with magnetic contrast. The main property of a magnetic domain wall, its size (a few nanometers), was precisely tuned by irradiation with a focused beam of high-energy ions to change the material properties. The resistance is higher in smaller domain walls, and these results are the first systematic verification of theoretical models on domain wall resistance. The results are important for future memory devices, which use electric current to move magnetic domain walls.
