Systems Engineering

Welcome to the Systems Engineering Group of the Eindhoven University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Our pages provide information on our educational activities, our research activities, and the people associated with the group. The group educates people to become a MSc in Mechanical Engineering, or a PhD in Engineering. Research concerns the design of industrial systems.

Mission

Figure 1 - Mission Triangle

The Systems Engineering group aims to develop quantitative methods for the analysis, design and implementation of (embedded) mechanical engineering systems exhibiting concurrent behavior, with particular focus on the manufacturing high tech industry. The objectives are to generate theory, to develop techniques, to build computational tools, and to apply these in selected cases from industry.
The research program of the Systems Engineering group is built on the triangle of Research, Engineering and Utilization (Figure 1).

The basis is mechanical engineering science, in which we use formal methods from computer science and methods from mathematics. Model-based engineering design methods and tools are developed on this scientific basis. These model-based engineering methods and tools are validated in selected
industrial applications. This is an important source of inspiration for the further development of research and educational activities.

The research triangle of Research, Engineering and Utilization is supported by the following strategic alliances. First of all, for the Research compartment, the Systems Engineering group participates in NIRICT. For the training of PhD students, we participate in two national research schools: the Institute for Programming Research and Algorithmics (IPA) and Engineering Mechanics (EM). For additional teaching of PhD students we occasionally adopt courses from the national research school DISC (Dutch Institute of Systems and Control). Secondly, for the Engineering compartment, the group participates in the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI), Point One (http://www.point-one.nl/) and the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI). Thirdly, for the Utilization compartment, the Systems Engineering group seeks application projects to be carried out with relevant industrial partners.

Education

The Systems Engineering Group provides education for people who wish to graduate as an engineer and MSc in Mechanical Engineering (with a specialisation in Systems Engineering), or as a PhD in Engineering. Furthermore, the group provides courses for the Dutch national MSc. specializations Embedded Systems and Systems and Control.

Research

The Systems Engineering Group performs research to gain insight in the field of Systems Engineering, makes the results accessible to other research groups, and incorporates the results in under-graduate, graduate and post-graduate courses in Systems Engineering to improve their quality. The Systems Engineering Group has long-term contacts with industry to validate, and to utilize the results of their research. These results must be profitable for both the industry and the group.

Each of the staff members of the group has a particular focus in research: Baeten focuses on model-based engineering, in particular process algebra , Van Beek  on hybrid systems (the interplay of discrete event models and continuously evolving entities), in particular the Common Interchange Format CIF and Hybrid Chi, Van de Mortel  on Supervisory Control Synthesis  and Reniers on model transformations, modelling and analysis of hybrid systems and Structured Operational Semantics.

Public Service

Finally, as a public service, the Systems Engineering Group assists local industries on an occasional basis so that they remain competitive. These activities do not compete with semi-governmental or private companies.
