The WinTU/er Village

TU/e is organizing the traditional WinTU/er Village in Atlas. Our wonderfully decorated Village Square and stage will return. This year it will feature a new area on the north-side of Atlas. A park like place with frozen pond, trees, soup and zopie… Yes, you’ll be able to come ice-skating! Also new: we have a first-ever TU/e fanshop in addition to our online gift store!

The WinTU/er Village is opened daily from 9:00-19:00h.
The TU/e Fan Shop is open daily from 14:00-17:00h.

Opened daily between 6 and 20 December

We have our program online! We offer 3 weeks of activities for our full community to enjoy. Daily activities include:

  • Performances at our Village Stage during the lunch break and after 17:00h
  • Activities at our Village Square, often during the lunch or after 16:00h
  • Ice skating at our Ice Rink from 11:00 till 19:00h!
  • WinTU/er food at the Soup & Zopie Stube, with regular take overs by associations and groups
  • WinTU/er food at the counters of Appèl and Brownies & Downies from 9:00 till 19:00h
  • Our first ever fan shop opened daily between 14:00-17:00h

Students and employers can take over parts of the market. We have a great program on offer for you to enjoy and we summarized the main activities:

Week 1 (6-8 December): Grand opening day and activities

Week 2 (11-17 December): A week packed with WinTU/er activities

Week 3 (18-20 December): Closing week & out with a bang

And this is just a short list of activities. You can find our daily updated program on the market itself!

Program highlights

Highlight! Grand Opening Day Wednesday 6 December

Our grand opening on Wednesday 6 December at 12:30h is something not to be missed! With Christmas music and a special performance by the Figure skating Academy the Netherlands (FAN) on ice. Wednesday night will feature a POP-up Cinema with free POP-corn & Snert (traditional pea soup).

Highlight! WinTU/erdip ‘n Salsa

Wednesday 13 December

Dance the night away with Footloose. They move their dance evening to the WinTU/er village and open up Salsa workshops to everyone to beat that winter-dip!

Highlight! TU/e Dinner Show

Thursday 14 December

This year we are adding another element to the WinTU/er Village, especially for services, departments and divisions of the university: a limited number of people can attend our first ever Winter Village Dinner Show, under the theme “All TUgether now!”

The theme of the evening is collaboration. When we do things together, we get further, have more fun and get better results. To further underline the value of working together, this year we are collaborating with musical talents from our own TU/e Bigband Studentproof. Music is a great way to show what the effect of ‘together’ is and the whole evening works towards a dazzling grand finale. In terms of catering, we also provide elements that connect. We asked De Kort Catering to prepare a delicious three-course dinner together with Appèl. Finally, the entire WinTU/er Villagpe will be involved in the dinner show. The dinner itself will take place on the fairy-tale Village Square, right in front of the stage.

It is sold out! But you can find the menu & details here. Please contact Appèl for reservations in 2024. 2023 is already sold-out.

Highlight! NEXUS PhD Meetup

Friday 15 December

NEXUS is hosting a small party around the Ice Rink for all PhD’s at TU/e from 16:00h onwards. Allas no PhDJ’s that afternoon, but luckily we have Studentproofs ‘Jammer Man’ (what’s in a name!) on stage.

Highlight! Christmas Concert

Quadrivium gives a very atmospheric Qerst Concert on Saturday 16 December at 20:00h. From the Nutcracker to Jingle Bells… enjoy all your favorite Christmas music! Tickets via  https://www.esmgquadrivium.nl/2023/10/ensuite-qerst-qoncert-16-december-2023/.

Highlight! Childrens WinTU/er Market

Sunday 17 December

A special Childrens WinTU/er Market will take place on Sunday 17 December from 13:00-17:00h. Expect ‘schminken’ (face painting), great food, a creative corner, a magician on stage, Christmas carols, free ice-skating and a real Santa Claus.

Highlight! Plugged WinTU/er Edition

Wednesday 20 December

We close the market with a special indoor version of Plugged! Wednesday 20 December from 17:00 until 22:00. Drop by to listen to live music, get a drink with your colleagues or fellow students, and dance away in Christmas spirit. https://www.pluggedfestival.nl/winter-plugged/

The Ice Rink

An indoor Ice Rink?! Yes indeed. Some of you might remember that we had a very popular ice rink in 2018 and 2019 on campus. It returns in 2023!

Of course, we didn’t go over one night of ice to order an ice rink. Because from a community perspective an ice-rink is great. However, putting ice indoors raises questions about the energy consumption. And at TU/e we practice sustainability. To make a decision, we considered the social, ecological and economic impact of an ice rink. Social: our community likes ice skating. Young and old, students and employers, all nationalities. It’s fun to do, fun to watch, great for your health and well-being. It's a great way to bring our community together. In addition, we open our ice rink to primary schools around TU/e. Ecological: an ice rink uses energy and we did our best to minimize the use of energy. The ice rink is being powered by electricity that is generated from renewable sources, as is all electricity used at TU/e. Furthermore, we use sustainable and circular materials. Economical: an ice rink is not cheap, but affordable plus it replaces other expenses we had during previous winter markets. Considering all arguments, we felt that the balance of the three points pointed towards a positive answer. Especially considering our specific measures to mitigate the energy use in combination with bringing the community together.

Find more information in our info sheet:

Or read more about sustainability of our Ice Rink at the suppliers website:

The Ice Rink is opened daily, between 11:00 and 19:00h. Note that we might open earlier, but we made a reservation for school-skating for kids between 10:00-11:00h!

Join the WinTU/er Village

As it is our WinTU/er Village, it means that we offer place to our community to organize activities or events. You let us know when and what, we provide a decorated place with basic facilities, you do ‘your thing’!

We have several options at the market:

Soup & Zopie’ Stube

Be a soup-erstar with everyones favourite winter soup: snert. This traditional Dutch Pea Soup (traditional or vegan) is thé ting to eat on cold, Dutch winter days. You can sell it, use it as a fundraiser, distribute it to promote an event/activity or… just for fun. We’ll arrange the soup with our soup-plier (haha) Appèl, you’ll pay per portion €1,25, which is the current wholesale price.

Do-it-your-Selfie Photo Booth

We provide a WinTU/er background and cool stuff to decorate, you bring your extra association stuff and your members for all those wonderful WinTU/er memories...

The Village Square

Will offer more space this year, so it is available for your activity! At the beautifully decorated square, you have a spot to organize your workshops, demo’s & activities. Almost everything is possible. About 50m² can be made available for any activity.

Village Stage

Our stage is available for performances! We increased the size (to 6x8m) so that more activities can take place. Music, demo’s, concerts, dances, home-alone marathons, maybe even a lunch lecture or award ceremony. We offer simple sound amplification in front of the village square. Wanna dance? We can remove some of our chairs in front of the stage for the more active afternoons. Space for 200-250 spectators.

Full take-over

If you like, you could fully ‘take over’ the WinTU/er Village with your own activity or party. Ask us about the possibilities.

We have a few slots open left. Check last-minute availability over here.

For timing purposes, we suggest you to schedule activities at the timeslots mentioned. Another idea? Contact Erik de Jong to share those ideas and we’ll try to fit it in.
