Bachelor Mechanical Engineering

Selection procedure

The selection procedure for the bachelor program Mechanical Engineering has now been completed. You can no longer apply for this program to start in 2024/2025.

In the near future, the TU/e will reconsider which study programs will retain their selection for the academic year 2025-2026. As soon as there is more clarity, we will inform you via the website and also by e-mail if you have an account in MyStart@TU/e. We expect to be able to provide more information about which programs these are and what the selection procedure looks like by October 1, 2024.

Why selection?

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is known for its small-scale, personal education. To maintain this approach and our high standard of education, we need to ensure that the right students enroll in our most popular bachelor's degree programs. If interest exceeds this maximum limit, we therefore apply a selection procedure to find students who best fit our profile of the Engineer of the Future.

Selection procedure

The selection procedure for Mechanical Engineering is based upon the following criteria:

  • The submission of the grades list during the application process (deadline January 15, 2024) Please note that the submission of the grades list is a mandatory requirement for participation in the selection process, but the grades will not affect your ranking number.
  • Timely completion of the Motivation and Ability Questionnaire. Please note that completion of this questionnaire is a mandatory requirement for participation in the selection process, but the result will not affect your ranking number.
  • Your scores on three tests:
    • Test on mathematics (25%)
    • Test on physics (25%)
    • Test about an online lecture covering a mechanical engineering subject (50%)

On the basis of the aforementioned criteria, a ranking list of candidates is formed, ranging from 1 to the number of participating candidates. In case of an equal ranking based on the selection criteria, the following order of those candidates will be selected randomly.

Make sure that you meet these criteria, for instance by sending in the required documents in time. If you do not meet these criteria, you are excluded from enrolment.

More information on important deadlines can be found here for candidates with a Dutch pre-education and here for candidates with a non-Dutch pre-education.

Selection day March 23rd, 2024

Participation in the selection day on Saturday March 23, 2024 is mandatory for anyone who wants to enter the Bachelor’s Program of Mechanical Engineering in September 2024. Make sure to mark this date in your calendar! We expect you to be available all day on this date. The selection day will be organized online. You will receive more information about the online selection day via email on February 9th, 2024 at the latest.

Please note: Keep an eye on your email (spam) inbox. Always use the email address that you have used to register in Studielink. Several emails will be sent to this email address. Candidates who live in the Netherlands need a DigiD to log in to Studielink. If applicable, apply for your DigiD at least one month before the official deadline.

Functional impairment
If you want to be considered for extra facilities in the selection tests, because of a functional impairment make sure to state this in your Studielink application.

Exception Procedure
If you wish to be considered for exception, you must submit a request to the director of ESA at selection@tue.nl before the deadline of January 31st, 2024 at 23.59 (UTC+1).

You can file a request to be considered for an exception procedure if you are unable to participate in the selection day for a very good reason, or submit an opt-out request if you have insurmountable objections to taking online proctored selection tests.
These requests must be clearly motivated and, if possible, supported by documentary evidence.

Only in cases of absolute force majeure can request for exception be submitted up to two working days before the selection day. More information you can find on the FAQ - header R

After the selection

When you receive a ranking number that does not exceed the number of available places, you will immediately be offered a place for the bachelor Mechanical Engineering (via Studielink). You must confirm this place within 14 days by completing your registration in Studielink. Otherwise, your place will go to the candidate with the next ranking number. This implies that in the following weeks, candidates with higher rank numbers can still be offered a place. Make sure to keep a close eye on Studielink and your e-mail.

Proto Day

On June 8th, 2024 a welcome event will be organized on campus for candidates who completed the selection procedure. The date will be communicated soon.

During this day you will get to know other candidates, the study association and the study program.

This event is not a compulsory part of the selection procedure, so attendance is not mandatory. You will receive an email with more information about this event.
