Extra training for visual puzzles at a micro-level

Please note: this activity is only offered in Dutch

Transitioning between micro- and macrolevel is a learning aim of the chemistry education. Students of the teacher training major looked into the usage of visual puzzles in order to stimulate this back-and-forth thinking. The puzzles were based on the traditional ‘find the differences’ puzzles in which the player has to find the differences between two images. Several images of acids and bases (see image below) were presented to the students in which the differences were also chemical mistakes. Students looked for the differences between the images and explained the mistakes that were made. Two parallel classes VWO5 were involved in this research. The class that did the puzzles, did significantly better on the higher ranked assignments of the exam.

In this extra training:

  • You’ll get more background information on images and micro-macro thinking
  • You’ll learn how to work with acid-base puzzles
  • We’ll develop new puzzles ourselves
