I’m designing a sustainable archive for the preservation of a film collection.

Cellulose nitrate was used for photographic and motion picture film during the first half of the 20th Century. This material is highly flammable and can ignite if not kept at specific climate conditions. For this reason, many films were lost in the past decades all around the world, representing a big loss for our cultural heritage. Following the principles of sustainability, such as the use of renewable materials and energy sources, I am designing an archive building for the optimal conservation of the Dutch Film Institute‘s nitrate film collection.

I chose the PDEng program because it is the perfect combination between research and design. The lectures, workshops and projects offered will help me gain further knowledge and develop professional skills, which will be useful for future career opportunities. After the PDEng, I would like to continue my career in the industry, contributing to the transition to a circular built environment.
