Course structure

The study program of Science Education and Communication consists mainly of two parts. A subject-specific part that is related to the field in which you want to become a teacher and a profession-oriented part that is focused on the professional competencies of a teacher.

The subject-specific part guarantees the broadening and deepening of the knowledge of the discipline. The profession-oriented part comprises theory (educational science, beta-methodology and subject didactics) and practice in secondary schools. In addition, attention is paid to designing and researching education.

The whole includes four packages and an investigation. Package 1 and 2 are rounded off in the first year. The theory is practice-oriented, while school practice raises questions and raises issues for theoretical frameworks. The programming in the training ensures that these two components go hand in hand. The second year: translation to practice. In the second year, the theoretical framework of educational science, beta-design and subject didactics will be continued. There is now also a translation to practice, with an extensive internship in education. You conclude the program with a design for beta-dulatory education (package 3) and a comprehensive practice-oriented research (package 4 and international research).

To modernize schools, the Research and Design (R&D) course has been developed within the context of the Technasium. There is also a general course 'Nature Life and Technology' (NLT). These courses are important to enable students to get acquainted with the technical and design aspects of the science subjects.

We, as teacher training at the TU / e, are responding to this. Together with the 3TU partners we offer a training variant with which you can acquire a combination of three competences:

  • a limited degree of certification for mathematics or physics;
    The granting of this authority depends on the entry into force of an AMVB that is being prepared at the Ministry. The entry into effect is expected in mid-2016. Until that time, SEC will issue its own certificate.
  • a first degree certification for R&D and;
  • a first-degreecertification for NLT.

With this you can develop, even if your technical study is a bit further away from the classical school subjects Natuur- Schei- or Mathematics, as a first-level teacher.


The course has been developed in consultation with the Ministry of Education and the educational field.

With this training you become an expert teacher who can be widely used in VMBO-T, HAVO and VWO. You are (starting) competent to take care of mathematics or physics in the substructure, R & D in the lower and upper grades and NLT in the superstructure. Your subject matter base for mathematics and physics is formed by an academic bachelor's degree program in one of the science subjects. For O & O and NLT, the basis lies in a master's program in one of the designing science subjects.

Internships and studying abroad

The Master Science Education and Communication offers opportunities to go abroad. For example, last year a group of students participated in the course B├Ętadidactiek 2 in an international project week in Greece. Here they were engaged in the development of beta education. There are three internships within the vocational part of the Master's program in Science Education and Communication. These are an orientation internship and two follow-up internships (workplace learning 1 and 2) in secondary education. Depending on the chosen specialization, there is often also a company internship within the subject-specific part of the Master's program.
