The automotive industry is rapidly changing into a high-tech sector facing huge challenges in terms of multidisciplinary product and process engineering. The trend towards smart components and systems is a strong driver for the Dutch automotive sector, and requires new generations of engineers with additional skills and training. The program emphasizes systems design and considers the challenges that to date are faced by the automotive industry: a systems approach to problems around mobility and fuel efficient automotive systems, including communication systems and electrical driving. Working with industry is an essential ingredient of the program. It is organized with close links to and cooperation with other successful PDEng programs as Software Technology (ST) and Mechatronic Systems Design (MSD).

The program is devoted to deepening, broadening, and reinforcing Automotive related technological knowledge and competencies, as well as personal and professional skills. Traineeships of the ASD program are provided by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), one of Europe's Top universities and situated in one of Europe's most innovative regions, Brainport Eindhoven. This program provides excellent means for accelerating your career in the desgin and development of technologies and applications for the multidisciplinary field of high-tech automotive systems.

TU/e offers program participants a full-time temporary appointment for the period of 2 years. Program participants will receive a monthly salary by Eindhoven University of Technology (gross monthly pay of  € 1913 during two years). Trainees do not have to pay tuition fees. The program is financed by the Dutch Government and the industrial partners.

Program graduates will be awarded a certified diploma and the degree “Professional Doctorate in Engineering” (PDEng). Their name will be entered in the PDEng register of the Royal Dutch Institute for Engineers (KIVI). The program is affiliated to the British Association of Engineering Doctorates (AEngD).
