Mastertrack Medical Imaging

Stan van Boxel

“In healthy aging people, a specific location in the brain (the locus coeruleus) contains high levels of the molecule neuromelanin. In people with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, this level is much lower. By developing MRI test models, I aim to prove that MRI techniques can be used to measure the concentration of this molecule, which could eventually help doctors detect the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. I chose TU/e because of its excellent biomedical engineering program. TU/e is a relatively small university, so it’s really easy to get in touch with your teachers. Eindhoven is a great city, with lots of places to entertain yourself. In the future, I’d like to apply for a PDEng degree program to start my career as an engineer working in a hospital.”
