BEP module The Future of Cities: healthy urbanization

Healthy cities, and more specifically, urban environments that encourage physical activity require an integral approach in which urban designers work together with professionals from the environmental, health and sports domain. In the module, the backgrounds are discussed and a practical case is designed for the healthy city.

Background
Almost every day you come across messages in the media that have to do with the healthy design of the living environment. This does not only concern problems such as noise nuisance around roads. Increasingly, the opportunities are also brought to the fore, such as the planning of parks, urban agriculture and the creation of safe cycling and walking routes to school or work.

A healthy living environment can contribute to the reduction of overweight, dementia, depression and, for example, cardiovascular diseases. A healthy city is also an attractive and economically viable city. Healthy cities are the future. Green and water not only have a positive influence on health and exercise, but also contribute to an attractive residential city and an economically favorable business climate. The development of healthy cities goes hand in hand with current themes such as climate adaptation, urban renewal and sustainability of the cities.

Healthy cities, and more specifically, urban environments that lead to physical activity require an integrated approach in which urban designers work together with professionals from the environmental, health and sports domain. That is why TU/e (Architecture - Urban Lab), RIVM, GGD and NISB jointly set up the Healthy Design platform. This interdisciplinary collaboration focused on concrete interventions in the city aimed at improving the health of its residents is unique. Our ambition is a residential and living environment that, on the one hand, minimizes health risks and, on the other, promotes healthy behavior. A city that seduces healthy behavior.

Content Module Healthy urbanization

Designing for the healthy city is central. A current theme that only comes to the fore in the current Bachelor / Master Curriculum. In the module, the backgrounds are discussed and a practical case is designed for the healthy city.

The module consists of the following parts:

  • Students are given the assignment in advance to collect literature on the subject (How can you design a healthy city?) And to collect 3 good and 3 bad examples.
  • The studio day. One intensive studio day at the TU / e will be organized. This studio day consists of the following parts:
    • Intrduction on the day and Healthy Urbanization (1 hour)
    • Pitches f the students about their preparation (1 hour)
    • Design sessin 1. Students work in duo's on practical assignments. Students introduce a practical case and start working on this. How can the design be optimized based on the principles of healthy urbanization? (2 o'clock)
    • LUNCH
    • Inspiratin reading by medical / health expert (30 minutes)
    • Design sessin 2. Further elaboration of the results (2 hours)
  • Presentatin of the results to group of experts from TU / e and debate (1 hour)
  • Reprting in the form of an essay that emphasizes redesign from a health perspective and substantive and personal learning experiences
