Data Science in Engineering
Technological and societal changes led to an explosion of digitally available data. Exploiting the available data to its fullest extent, in order to improve decision making, increase productivity, and deepen our understanding of scientific questions, is one of today's major challenges. Data science is an emerging discipline that aims to address this challenge. It is a multi-disciplinary domain, where computer science and mathematics play crucial roles, complemented with human-technology interaction, business models and operations management expertise and skills.
This is a joint master program of Mathematics and Computer Science which can be studied as a special track in either the Computer Science and Engineering Master or the Industrial and Applied Mathematics Master.
The program includes several core courses as well as great freedom of choice in the form of electives. The core courses span a wide range of computer science and statistics courses and include base competences such as: Process Mining, Data Mining, Algorithms, Visualization, Real-life data challenges, Statistics for Big Data, Statistical Learning Theory, and Probability and Stochastic Processes.
A wide range of options
The freedom you have to determine the content of your program enables you to take your studies in any direction: from a heavily theory-based program to the complete opposite in the form of a more practice-based program. You could focus more on computer science or on mathematics or create a mixed profile.
A unique feature of the DS programs is that it is truly multidisciplinary, as expressed by the base competences. This broad base is necessary to become a data scientist. Next to this broad base, there is also the need to specialize and perform research in one or a subset of these competences. The DS programs facilitate this level of specialization, while gaining breadth and practical experience throughout data science. This special Master track is formally a track of the Master program Computer Science and Engineering and of the Master program Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The Master program Computer Science and Engineering and the Master program Industrial and Applied Mathematics are accredited by NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie), the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders.
