My thesis was about recommendation systems for movies: systems that can predict which movies you’ll like based on those that you’ve seen before

Mark Graus, alumnus

I already had some practical experience before I graduated.

I’m working as Web Analytics Consultant at Adversitement, a well known European player in the field of online analytics and optimization. I advise and support customers in measuring visitor behavior on their websites – of course using the latest technology and in accordance with the new legislation. I spend four days a week on this work, and as well as that I work one day a week on my PhD research at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). I find work and research a valuable combination, because through my work I know which issues are relevant for companies, and through my research at TU/e I keep up-to-date with the latest developments and opportunities that companies can benefit from.

I work for different clients at Adversitement, and the activities range from testing whether the web analytics work properly through to identifying which parts of a website can best be changed to optimize the way it works. Adversitement has locations in the UK, France, Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands, which means I often have to work together with international colleagues.

Before I started work at Adversitement I had already gained some working experience during my graduation project. My thesis was about recommendation systems for movies: systems that can predict which movies you’ll like based on those that you’ve seen before. This was part of a European project in which the BBC and Microsoft were also involved. That’s why I was able to take part in this project while I was graduating, so I already had some practical experience before I graduated.
