The first nine months consist of a menu of courses and workshops.

The courses aim at a broad experience in technology and engineering sciences: modelling, statistics, as well as subjects deepening technical knowledge are a part.

Next to this training and workshops on subjects such as project management, personal development, technical writing and editing, presenting etc. are included.

During this period also a first project of approximately 2-3 months is done in industry.

Design Project

The next twelve months are spent working full time in an industrial environment or an industry-related research institute. The project  is part of the actual R&D program of the company or institution involved. A thorough analysis of the final terms of the project in close cooperation with the 'customer' who will use the device or final product, is the first step in the design. Based on this specification, a careful plan is made of the work to be done. Design, construction, testing, documentation, and 'delivery' are the consecutive phases of the project.

A wide variety of projects have been executed by the trainees of the DTI course, ranging from the fabrication of high precision transmission gratings with nanometer dimensions to a system for mammography in the optical domain by the reconstruction of diffuse transmitted light images, efficiency measurements for the dredging industry to design of propulsion propellers for ships. The companies involved are both large cap (e.g., Philips) as well as mid- and small cap industries (e.g., Océ and Frencken Mechatronics). All projects have a multidisciplinary character in common. Check this overview of recent projects.

During the project there is extensive supervision, both on contents and how you approach the project. This ensures optimal learning and a good result. Still: you will be the owner of the project.

It is good to realize that companies pay a very significant fee for the projects. This means two things:

  • It is always hard to find a project. Typically there is not such a choice as during a Master project. Projects and trainees are chosen by the companies; not by the trainee or the program staff.
  • The projects which are found, are always very relevant for the company, since they will only spend a lot of money on something which is important to them This means you will always have a project with good support (and some sleepless nights and working through the weekends).

Of course, trainees are fully involved in finding the project. We try to find projects in which you can bring in some of your present knowledge. But also in which there is a lot to learn.

International project

Finally, the last three months are used for an international traineeship in industry, with a preference for the USA due to its highly competitive culture. In these last months the trainee can prove that he/she is ready for the first job of his/her professional career: 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'. Check this overview of recent international projects.

Other parts

Throughout the program there are several additional activities. There are monthly meetings with all trainees where experiences are shared. Each trainee has a personal budget to follow additional courses, buy relevant books, visit exhibitions etc.
