Trainees 2013

Erikos Alkalai received his diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics from University of Patras, Greece in 2012. During his diploma thesis he designed and installed a dynamic application for the total organization of a small to medium company. Moreover as a Microsoft Student Partner at University of Patras he led and founded the first “Microsoft Student Tech Club” in Greece, also known as StudentGuru Patras. In this effort he was part of a team that organized software development competitions, free seminars and lectures of programing techniques regarding mostly .NET technology. Last but not least he participated in Microsoft’s ImagineCup competition with project OramA, a fully personalized software platform, specially designed for kids with mental disabilities.

Johan Bertrand Bonnemason received his Diploma in Computer Science and Engineering from the Computer Science department of the Complutense University of Madrid in July 2013. His diploma thesis ‘Muphic: Image-Based Automatic Composing’ studies the relationship between images and sound through synesthesia using algorithmic composition. It was awarded third place in a competition made by Sopra group due to its originality. His interests include human interaction with software and application design.

Favio Bettiol received his BSc degree from National University of Rio Cuarto (Argentina) in 2011. During his course of studies, he was second teaching assistant for 3 years through different subjects. His final thesis, entitled "Implementation of a Distributed Combinatory Engine over FuD and its Application to Bioinformatic Problems", was developed for a non-governmental organization called FuDePan and its main goal was to analyze and rank all possible therapies that can be applied to a patient infected with HIV. As result of that work, a paper known as "HIV Antiviral Escape Impact On Viral RNA Secondary Structure" was published in 2011. He started his professional career in 2012 in an Argentinian company where he had to work with different technologies. The most important projects in which he was involved were: the implementation of a social application in Android and the development of a firmware to stabilize a camera.

Tom Boshoven received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Eindhoven University of Technology in 2011. After this, he continued studying and received his Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the same university in 2013. During his studies he specialized in formal systems analysis, in particular the model checking problem, resulting in his thesis "A Symbolic Approach to PBES Instantiation". Throughout his studies, he played a role as software developer for the adult-size humanoid soccer robot of team Tech United of this university. During the last year of his studies, he worked part-time for Longtail Video in Eindhoven, as a software developer for an online video platform. After his studies, he moved to New York City for three months, to continue his work for this company as a full-time software engineer.

Minh Bui received his BSc degree in Computer Science from Hanoi University of Technology, Vietnam in 2009. After graduation, he worked for two years as a software developer at a Vietnamese mobile network operator. He worked on projects for high availability and scalability systems. In 2011, he was granted scholarship by German Academic Exchange Service to pursue an MSc degree in Software Systems Engineering program from Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering, Bangkok, Thailand. His Master thesis, titled "Tangent-Linear and Adjoint GPU code", was carried out at Software and Tools for Computational Engineering group, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. In this thesis, he proposed OpenACC APIs to offload any computationally intensive part of derivative program to an accelerator device, e.g. GPUs. His research resulted in a publication, namely "Towards Tangent-linear GPU Programs using OpenACC", in the Proceedings of the Vietnam ACM chapter in 2013. His research interests include software design and architecture, parallel and distributed computing.

Girmay Desta received his BSc degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 2007 from Mekelle Institute of Technology, Ethiopia. He worked in a research agency as a researcher before pursuing his Master program. He got his MSc degree in 2013 from The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden; specializing in Information Communication Systems Security. For his master thesis he worked on the title ‘Security of Mobile Payment Transactions’, that was demonstrated on iPhone interfacing with smart-card reader. After his studies he worked as lecturer and R&D at Mekelle Institute of Technology. His interests include software design and information security.

Konstantinos Filippidis received his Diploma in Information and Communication Systems Engineering from the Aegean University, Greece in June 2012. During his studies he specialized in Software Technology, Systems Architecture Design and Analysis. His diploma thesis is titled “Design and Implementation of Behavioural-Driven games for modern mobile platforms”. The goal was to create a cognitive Android App employing machine-learning algorithms to interactively adapt to the user gaming expertise, thus offering a more realistic and exciting game experience.

Weldebrhan Gebrezgabher received his BSc. degree from Mekelle Institute of Technology (MIT), Ethiopia in Computer Science and Engineering in the year 2009. Then he worked as Assistant Lecturer in Mekelle Institute of Technology for one year before he left to pursue his Master study at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He received his Master degree in Computer Engineering, Embedded systems on November 27, 2012. His Master thesis was on Model based software design which is a new way of software development for Automotive, Avionic and Industrial control applications that includes automatic validation, verification and code generation. His research interests include embedded systems, real-time and safety-critical systems.

Neha Gupta received her Bachelor of Computer Science (2006) from MDU University, India and Master of Computer Science degree (2009) from Amity University, India.  She carried out her final project in HCL Ltd. (Indian IT company) on designing database and application development of "Retail management" project. After her Master's she worked for IT Services company, Steria India Ltd., for 2.9 years(2010-2013) as ETL Developer using Abinitio Tool in Banking domain (for Barclays Bank, UK).

Hang Liu received his BSc Degree of Engineering from Wuhan University, China in 2011. His BSc project “The Design of Aurostar 3 Intelligent Control System Q1” was carried out as an internship at a local company for developing an embedded stage light control system. After that, he continued with his master study in Embedded System at the Eindhoven University of Technology and received his diploma in 2013. The study focused on the architecture and design of embedded software systems. As a result, an Android based semantic interoperable remote patient monitoring system is developed during the master thesis project.

Duc Luu received his MSc. degree in Software Engineering in February 2010 from the Faculty of Environment and Technology, University of the West of England. His master thesis was titled “Riva Process Architecture Graphical Editor”, which aimed to develop a free and specialized tool offering more computer support to improve the process of modeling Riva process architecture. Since then he had returned to his country and joined the software industry, providing software solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam for nearly 4 years. His main interests are web and mobile applications, big data, and distributed computing.

Lindung Manik received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia, in 2008. His bachelor thesis project tried to make a model and prototype of smart lathe, a machine tool in autonomous distributed manufacturing system, by using object oriented methods. After that, he joined a local company called Telkomsigma as Java programmer trainee. Before he joined the software technology program, his last position was System Analyst. He was responsible for PC based application developments for financial managed service solutions. During that time, he also received his master degree in Information Technology from University of Indonesia in 2011. His master thesis project, "Design and Implementation of Middleware in Payment Gateway Information System", made high contribution to his work in the financial service industry. His main research interest is software design in real-time distributed system development.

Trajche Masinov received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Skopje, Macedonia), in October 2009, specializing in Informatics and computer Engineering. He received his MSc degree in Software Engineering of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (Skopje, Macedonia) in November 2013. His master thesis involved utilizing modern data visualization techniques as a tool for displaying news, offering different ways a user consumes everyday news. In parallel with the master studies he worked for almost 5 years as a Software Developer at Edusoft, Macedonia, developing Web-based information systems in ASP.NET and SQL Server/Oracle RDBMS.

Chan Naseeb received his Bachelors in Computer Science from COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Pakistan, in 2007. His thesis is named “Online Instrument Calibration System for a Cement factory”. After that he decided to trade the sun to broaden his exposure, in 2008 he came to Italy, and graduated with Master of Science in Computer Engineering (with scholarship) from Politecnico Di Milano (2010). His Master thesis focused on Ontologies, knowledge representation in semantic web, making a comparison of Ontology engineering, reasoning and management systems.  During his stay at Politecnico Di Milano, he has won the opportunities to participate in a summer school (in Italy) and in two one week courses at ParisTech France, regarding “Operations Research” and “Scientific Methods for Research in Computer Science” under the ATHENS (Advance Technology Higher Education Network/SOCRATES) framework. After working for 6 months in Milan as a Software Engineer, he came to the Netherlands as knowledge immigrant, and so far he has an experience of 2+ years in industry. During his work he mainly focused on web application development, mobile application development, portal development and training consultants. His interests range from Software Engineering (OOAD), BPM to Semantic web and Linked Data.

Navaraj Neupane received his Bachelor degree as BIM (Bachelor in Information Management) from Tribhuwan University, Nepal. He received his MS in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan in 2012. He did his MS thesis on Information Retrieval entitled “Reviewer Recommendation using Academic Tag Extraction based on Boolean and Vector Space Model”. His thesis proposed a recommendation system which assists journal and conference editors to find suitable reviewers for the proposal. After his studies he worked as Software Engineer in Leapfrog Technology Inc. , a software development company in Nepal. His working expertise is connected with Java and related platform. His interests include information analysis and application development.      

Arash Shafiei graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Software Engineering from Department of Computer Engineering, University of Isfahan, Iran in 2009 and an M.Eng. degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from Department of Computer Science, University of Toulouse, ENSEEIHT,  France in 2011. He joined NExT Search Center at School of Computing, National University of Singapore in 2011 as a Research Assistant working on an interactive video streaming system. He later joint Multimedia Application Group at Telecom ParisTech, Paris, working on an open-source DASH streaming application. He is interested in software architecture and design, specifically in multimedia systems.

Karthik Srinivasan graduated from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Anna University in 2007. He worked as a senior software Engineer from 2007-2010 on Travel and Transportation domain at a leading Indian IT company for projects with Unisys Inc., USA, ANA Japan and ACS [Xerox] USA, and also received his M.B.A. from the University of Madras. He received his M.Tech. from the Centre for Excellence in Computational Engineering and Networking, Amrita University in 2012. His work on Image enhancement and segmentation is published in International journals. As a student at Amrita University he was keen in establishing and developing communication facilities for the poor, living in remote and rural south India. From 2012 - 2103 he was working as an Assistant Professor. His interests include e-governance and Applications of ICT in health care and education.

Pelagia Sykoudi Amanatidou received her diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2013. During her studies she focused on Software Technology and Computer Science. Her diploma thesis is titled “Navigation of a robot using potential fields and neural networks in a given place and design of methods for its efficient exploration ”. It was an opportunity to study many artificial intelligence methods and specialize in the field of genetic algorithms. In addition, during her studies, she was a member of PANDORA, the University’s robotics team, where she took part on developing the robot’s software development of interface for establishing reliable communication between the different types of modules for each part of the robot. The team won the 2nd place in the RoboCup World Competition 2013, in Eindhoven.

Tesfahun Tesfay received his BSc. degree in Information Technology from Mekelle Institute of Technology, Ethiopia in 2010. After graduation he worked for Defence Engineering College, Ethiopia as a graduate assistant for one year. In September 2011 he came to the Netherlands and started his Master degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering track at the faculty of EEMCS- Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Twente, Enschede, from where he obtained his master degree in August 2013. During his internship at Sytematic Software, a Dutch Software Company, he developed a language for modeling REST APIs. During his master thesis at BiZZdesign, a Dutch Software Company, he developed an automated system, annotation language and algorithms for identifying business process distribution options and their consequences for cloud-based BPM. During his studies he redesigned Aspect J in, the effort of supporting other programming languages in addition to Java. His main research interests include language engineering, model driven engineering and software architectures.

Jiazhuo Zhang received his bachelor degree (2007) in Computer Science and Technology from Zhengzhou University. His final thesis was about design and implementation of a CPU system based on FPGA. He received his master degree (2011) from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in the research field of Embedded Systems. His diploma thesis is entitled “JTAG Debug System Based on ARM11 Family Processor”. He also did an internship in Routon Electronic Co., Ltd during his master study. Between 2011 and 2013, he worked in Huawei Technology Co., Ltd (Hisilicon) as a software engineer. His main task involved  a video phone system based on Set-top Box chip. His main interests include embedded systems and software design.
