In his dissertation, which he successfully defended earlier this year at Erasmus School of Economics, Rolf applied advanced analytical techniques to improve the design and operations of public transport systems. During his PhD, Rolf worked closely together with Netherlands Railways and ProRail. Knowing that it may take time before research is really implemented in practice, Rolf aims that his research eventually leads to a better experience of public transport users.

The dissertation prize is sponsored by the INFORMS Society on Transportation Science & Logistics. It is the eldest and most prestigious honour for doctoral dissertations in the transportation science and logistics area.

“Receiving the honourable mention feels as recognition of my research and all the work I put into it”, says Rolf. “It also motivates me to continue this line of research and contribute to shaping the public transport systems of the future.”
