ICMS Fellowship for Ignasi Jorba Masdéu

January 27, 2022

While studying Physics at the University of Barcelona (Spain), Ignasi got interested in the underlying physical mechanics describing biological processes. Specifically, how extracellular matrix (ECM) physical signals control cell fate in regeneration and disease processes. Therefore, he pursued a PhD in the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), focused on the characterization of ECM mechanical properties of biological tissues. During his PhD, he was fascinated by how ECM physical properties regulate cellular behaviour in tissue homeostasis and regeneration.

After finishing his PhD, at the beginning of 2020, he moved to The Netherlands to perform his postdoctoral research at the Eindhoven University of Technology and within ICMS. Here, under the supervision of Prof. Carlijn Bouten, he is focused on unravelling how ECM physical properties control cardiovascular tissue organization. Using a multidisciplinary approach combining biomaterials, biochemistry and biomechanical technologies, he is developing in vitro models to decipher the biomechanical basis of tissue organization. Fundamental knowledge of these processes will be key for developing novel regenerative strategies for cardiovascular diseases.

We wish Ignasi an enjoyable and productive ICMS Fellowship.
