Chan Botter, Kalpit Bakal and Mohammad Jouy Bar have been crowned the winners of the FameLab TU/e heat 2021, which took place during an online event on Thursday April 29nd. The winners will now go on to represent TU/e in the national FameLab final that will take place on June 1st.

FameLab is a science communication competition that encourages young researchers to engage with science communication early in their scientific careers. The premise is simple: a 3-minute pitch on a scientific topic, no slides, and an optional prop.

In the event hosted by TU/e science communication officer Barry Fitzgerald, 14 TU/e researchers presented their pre-recorded pitch videos to an online audience of more than 200 people. After each pitch video, the researcher faced live, tough questions from a jury of Sophia Shanko (FameLab TU/e winner 2020), Kees Storm (TU/e physicist), and Karlijn Meinders (BNR science editor).

After the researchers presented their video pitches, three winners were selected – two by the jury and one by the online audience.

Jury Winner – first place – Chan Botter

The jury winner was Chan Botter (Industrial Design), who presented '(Iron)fueling a clean future'. In her pitch video, Botter, who is leader of the student team SOLID, spoke about iron as a clean, circular fuel to enable energy-intensive industries to make the energy transition. The jury selected the winner based on the three C’s of a FameLab pitch – content, clarity, and charisma.

Jury Winner – second place –  Kalpit Bakal

The jury awarded a second place to Kalpit Bakal. In his pitch video, called ‘Size doesn’t matter’, Bakal (Mechanical Engineering) talked about jet driven injections as a way to overcome needle phobia.

Audience Winner – Mohammad Jouy Bar

The audience winner was Mohammad Jouy Bar, who spoke about 'Lung cancer on a chip for personalized drug development'. In his pitch Bar (Mechanical Engineering) explained how organoids can help in the testing and development of medicine.

Best of luck to these winners for the national FameLab final, which will be hosted by TU/e on June 1st.
