On May 1st, Niki Joosten joined the Membranes Materials and Processes (MMP) group as a PhD student at Eindhoven University of Technology. Niki studied Molecular Life Sciences at Wageningen University, where she obtained her BSc. and MSc. degrees. During her bachelor she studied the minor Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Universidad de Chile. Her master thesis was partly conducted at Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona. During this period, Niki studied the properties of Curcumin Metal-Organic Frameworks on silica surfaces. For her internship at DSM Coating and Resins, Niki studied the influence of the synthesis process on the properties and charge distribution of polyurethane dispersions.

At the TU/e, Niki will be working on the project - Membranes with ordered, self-aligned pores for valorization of aqueous streams and ion separations – in collaboration with Stimuli-responsive Functional Materials & Devices group at TU/e and Wetsus, European center of excellence for sustainable water technology, Leeuwarden.  The aim of the project is the development of self-organized liquid crystal polymers with well-defined uniform pores in the nm range and their subsequent optimization and application for large scale industrial processes for water treatment.
