'Het Bos' ('The Woods') 1959
Ben Guntenaar (1922-2009) studies at the National Academy of Visual Arts (the 'Rijksacademie') in Amsterdam. He teaches at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and decides to follow his own creativity only later. His early works are figurative and expressive, like 'Het Bos' ('The Woods') of 1959. After 1975 Guntenaar's work develops in an ever more minimalistic, architectural and abstract direction.
From the nineteen sixties onwards Guntenaar spends much time living and working in the Dordogne region of France. The local quarries yield Vilhonneur, Guntenaar's favourite stone. After selecting a piece of stone he divides it into sections. These he sculpts and then arranges them into a new work of art.
