Hans Ittman

Draadplastiek (Thread Plastic) 1958

Hans Ittman (1914 - 1972) begins drawing at an early age and continues to do so while studying law. To the dismay of the family of notaries from which he hails he abandons his legal studies to become an artist. He wins a scholarship from the French state and studies at the Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts from 1946 to 1949. Also, he works in the studio of Zadkine.

Ittman works in a wide variety of styles and is one of the first Dutch artists to make thread plastics. He pays much attention to the deformation of human forms, as this thread plastic of 1958 shows. He strongly advocates the integration of the visual arts and architecture. To this his Wall plastic (1961) bears witness.
