Henk Oddens

'Horizontale Kastanje' / 'Verticale Kastanje' ('Horizontal Chestnut' / 'Vertical Chestnut'), 1997

Location: Auditorium (floor 2)

The sculptor Hendrik Oddens (1942) specializes in portraits and headstones on commission. He also makes free work, using stone, bronze, scrap metal as well as wood to shape his sculptures.

In primary school he already is given the nickname 'Michelangelo', as he sculpts heads in cement using a chisel. He develops his skills at the Academy of Visual Arts (1956-1960) and the Rijksacademie (1960.-1962), both at Amsterdam.

TU/e acquired two statues using chestnut tree trunks as a basic idea. Oddens tries to make personal impulses result in interconnected and purposeful sculptures, combining the rational, feeling and movement.
