'Nereide on Triton' 1962

Location: Flux building

Nic Jonk (1928 - 1994) took most of his inspiration from Greek mythology. This is noteworthy, as in the nineteen fifies and sixties classical themes were not highly regarded in the artistic mainstream. Nic Jonk's sculpture is organic, featuring round forms and much volume.

'Nereide on Triton' is a typical example of Jonk's work. We see Nereide, a sea nymph from Greek mythology, intimately embraced with Triton, who is represented here as a dolphin. Nic Jonk must have been quite fond of this theme, as he made many variants of this sculpture in various sizes.
