European forests under climate change: mitigation and adaptation options
Gert-Jan Nabuurs | Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
Europe is covered for 40% with forests; covering almost as much area as the Brazilian amazon. These forests have all been managed for long time and can be seen as part of N hemisphere rebound. There is more forests than ever since early Medieval times. The 16 million private owners and state forest services provide large volumes of wood to the industry. The sink was significant but is decreasing due to various reasons, a.o. climate impacts. At the same time the EU develops many new regulations concerning climate, sinks, bioenergy, and nature restoration. In the talk I will give an over view of these developments, as well as touch upon the role in climate mitigation.
About the speaker
Gert-Jan Nabuurs is professor European forest resources at Wageningen University and senior researcher at Wageningen Environmental Research, WUR. His background is in European scale forest resource analyses under climate change and changing forest management. He started and co develops EFISCEN-space, a high resolution European forest resource model based on 300,000 NFI plots. Applications are in wood availability, effects of forest management, climate change impacts, biodiversity and CO2 sequestration. He was CLA of the Agriculture and Forestry chapter in the IPCC 6AR.
