From static to ‘dynamic’ and ‘agentic’ resources in mathematics education

Prof.dr. Birgit Pepin was appointed as full professor of Mathematics/STEM Education at the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE) of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) on January 1, 2015.
She will deliver her valedictory lecture on June 2, 2023.

About the lecture
In her valedictory lecture, Professor Pepin will look back on her academic career in the UK (where she lived for 26 years), in Norway, and particularly in the Netherlands. The theme will be the development and use of mathematics curriculum resources for and by teachers and students. Mathematics curriculum resources have always played an important role in the teaching and learning of mathematics both in and out of class. In recent years, curriculum resources have changed from static and text-based (e.g., textbooks) to dynamic and digital resources. Whilst both students and teachers can find a plethora of such resources on the web, it is often not clear which resources to choose (and how to evaluate their quality) or how to design coherent and effective mathematics learning environments and trajectories with the available resources. Students often want to be supported in driving their own learning, particularly in innovative (e.g., challenge-based) learning environments. In these environments, teacher and student responsibilities change, and agency becomes distributed across teachers, students and ‘agentic’ mathematics resources.
