Wi-Fi networks are clogging up because of too many competing WiFi devices and too much data traffic. Q: How can we make WiFi future proof?

In this edition of Science café experts like prof. Bart Smolders, professor of Telecommunications (TU / e) talk about how we can keep wireless internet future-proof (Dutch spoken).

The number of Wi-Fi devices on the market will grow from 25 billion to more than 75 billion over the next five years. The battle for the limited number of frequency channels will eventually lead to an untenable situation. Fortunately, technology is everything but standing still and solutions are already being developed.

To 5G and even 6G
One of the solutions is the use of higher frequencies and more antennas at a smaller distance from each other. 5G - which stands for 5th generation mobile network - may soon be the new standard for our mobile networks, but prof. Bart Smolders and colleagues are already working on the development of 6G antennas to make the mobile network even faster and even more reliable. It could, for example, contribute to the large-scale introduction of self-driving cars. Smolders recently received a European grant for it.

Not everyone is convinced of the absence of adverse health effects as a result of the use of higher frequencies and more antennas . At the beginning of September there was a demonstration against the introduction of the 5G network. However, no evidence of adverse health effects has yet been found by science.

Science café Eindhoven
Studium Generale TU / e and Van Piere Bookstore organize Science Café Eindhoven five times a year on Tuesday evenings; a meeting place for everyone who is interested in the world of science, who wants to be inspired and who wants to think about and discuss scientific developments. Regular attention is paid to research that takes place at the TU / e. Think of themes such as: sustainable energy, the future of mobility, human design, the robotization of our society and artificial intelligence.
