About the lecture
In our modern world, enormous amounts of data are being generated by all kind of electronic devices and systems as well as by people online. This so-called Big Data can be used for a whole range of new (unforeseen) purposes, such as official statistics. However, when one attempts to do this, a number of statistical quality issues emerge. For instance, the data generation process is usually unknown, the data may not directly contain the concept the researcher wants to measure and the data are often produced by an unknown population. It is essential that these challenges are dealt with - in some way or another - to ensure that reliable statistics can be produced. In the lecture, the possibilities and challenges in the exciting area of using Big Data for official statistics are discussed and illustrated with examples, whereby not only the importance but also the downside of Data Science techniques become apparent.

In the event you cannot attend, you can join via live stream, or watch the lecture after the event.

After May 26, 2023, the text of the lecture will be available online.
