ICAI Deep-Dive is a community meetup that focuses on shared interested topics and subjects in-depth, despite the differences of the primary research domains of each community member and lab. The aim is to promote knowledge transfer via experience sharing and open discussion; finding solutions for the common challenges and issues in the community.

13:03 Marcel Worring (Police Lab AI Amsterdam, UvA), presents “Using Public and Closed Data to Catch Criminals”

13:16 Q&A
How is police research different from regular university research?
How to make the results trustworthy?
How to make the results explainable?

Using Public and Closed Data to Catch Criminals

“The National Police Lab AI is a collaboration between the National Police, University Utrecht and University of Amsterdam. The lab is consisting of over 15 people and growing. In the lab there are three main streams of research: Data-driven, in particular, deep learning
based, methods, knowledge driven techniques to bring in the domain specifics and simulations to make predictions. In this talk we will elaborate on the different research areas, their reliance on data, and the ways of working in the lab where we cover the whole chain from fundamental research through applied research and on to deployment in the operation.”

Energy Saving recommendations: personalized advice is important to achieve a successful energy transition

To achieve a more sustainable energy system, we have to take into account all stakeholders involved. Governmental agencies and energy suppliers and distributors work together to shape the environment in which new sustainable innovations such as heat-pump, solar PV and electric vehicles can have a place. Subsidies and regulations might motivate consumers to invest in these new technologies or to adapt their life-style to reduce and change their energy consumption. However, such policies are often ineffective as consumers are unaware of what measures to take and which measures fit them best. I will demonstrate how personalized energy recommendations tailored to the energy saving ability of the consumer are effective in helping consumers to know what to change. I will also discuss how we plan to extend this work (in the context of the Ilustre LAB) to topics such as grid balancing, in which current Demand-response methods do not yet use the full potential of AI and recommendations to have individual users play a more active role in aligning supply and demand of energy.
