Eindhoven – The city of light

Eindhoven is one of the newer cities of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant in the south of the country. It is the fifth-largest municipality of the Netherlands and the largest of North Brabant. It was declared as a city in 1232. At that time there were only 170 houses built in the confluence of the streams Dommel and Gender. Nowadays, only Dommel runs through the city.

Eindhoven is a modern, dynamic city that guarantees an enjoyable study period and varied student life. The vibrant spirit liveliness of Eindhoven along with the exuberant Brabant way of life will make everyone feel at home. Numerous cultural and sports events take place through the year, and its strategic location gives easy access to other cities and surrounding countries (Belgium and Germany).

In addition, the city of Eindhoven is known as a technology hotspot. Since the establishment of the Philips lamp factory at the end of the nineteenth century, the city has turned into a powerful industrial region. This growth is evident in the city’s appearance with buildings and factories of the 1920s and 1930s alternating with contemporary office buildings for service companies and modern high-tech companies. Eindhoven is now one of Western Europe’s leading technology centers. Many global companies have established research, development and production facilities in the Eindhoven area. Due to Philips – and because of the various projects involving lighting up city buildings – Eindhoven has become known as the City of Light.

The Dutch government officially recognizes Eindhoven as one of the three mainports in the Netherlands, alongside Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam. This justifies that it was given the name ‘Brainport’. Forty percent of all Dutch spending on research & development takes place in this region. This makes it the only province in the Netherlands to meet the Lisbon targets, as well as giving it a top three position in Europe. As a matter of fact, in 2011, Eindhoven was nominated as the most intelligent community of the year worldwide by ICF. You can watch the video of the nomination here.

Eindhoven has a lot to offer people with a technological focus. As a student you can benefit from the presence of many high-tech companies located both on and near the TU/e campus.
