Research profile

The professional career of Jos Lichtenberg is ever since 1976 based on innovation and product development. He founded at Rockwool a R&D department for the Western European Building Market. At DSM he was responsible for R&D for the Building Division and the development of fuel cells for space application (European space shuttle, the Hermes project). Later he was active as a product development consultant in numerous leading companies. His PhD thesis about success agents in Industrial Product Development was finished in 2002. In 2003 he became a Professor in Product Development. Outside the University he is among others chairman of the Slimbouwen foundation and consultant in innovation projects. Recently he initiated and realized the so-called House of Tomorrow Today (HoTT) an energy surplus house being built according to the visions of both Slimbouwen and Active House.

Slimbouwen (‘slim’ in Dutch means both lean and intelligent, ‘bouwen’ is to build) is a vision on change in the Construction Industry tackling the societal challenges simultaneously. It is based on disintegration of services from building parts in order to obtain an efficient building process and adaptability during utility. Also the Active House principles based on energy neutrality without conceding to comfort, are adopted in the program.

His research contribution is focussed on changes in building technology as a result of societal developments like the search for sustainability, energy neutrality, comfort and health, material shortage, decline of population, grey growing society, need for efficiency, industrial processes, etc.
