André Jorissen is guest professor of Timber Structures at the department of the Built Environment, unit Structural Design. His main affiliation is with 'SHR Hout Research' (Dutch timber research foundation) where he is a structural engineer and building physics consultant.
The research areas of his chair at TU/e are Structural properties of timber and timber products; glues and mechanical Connections; static and dynamic (seismic) structural design with timber; and Bamboo. In timber research, topics not yet fully understood and still important for structural design are related to the impact of the grain direction on the structural design for which, of course, the strength values and the (nonlinear) deformation behavior (stiffness) in these directions are important. This also includes strategies to develop models of fracture mechanics, damage and stress accumulation theories and stress analyses using experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches.
André Jorissen studied Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), where he obtained his engineering degree in 1985. He then joined 'H.E. Lüning Adviesbureau for Technische Houtconstructies' (Doetinchem) and continued his career at 'ABT Adviesbureau voor Bouwtechniek' (Velp). In 1994, he joined TU Delft to carry out research into timber connections. In 1998, this resulted in his thesis 'Timber Connections with Dowel-type Fasteners'. He then returned to ABT for which he started up a project related to 'SHR Hout Research' (Dutch timber research foundation) which he joined in 2003 as a structural engineer and building physics consultant. That same year he became professor of Timber Structures at the faculty of the Built Environment of Eindhoven University of Technology. André Jorissen chaired the European Standardisation Committee CEN/TC250/SC5 which develops the Structural Design Standards on Timber Engineering (Eurocoe 5).
