Research Focus

The goal of the SMR group is to:

quantitatively understand and develop multi-phase and complex integrated reactors in which chemical or physical transformations take place.

These reactors include – but are not limited to – fluidized bed and packed bed reactors, possibly with integrated separation via perm-selective membranes or chemical looping, bubble column reactors, spray dryers, and coating and granulation devices.

We reach our goal through a concerted effort of state-of-the-art modelling and experimentation, in which the two chairs focus on the following aspects:

SMM (Scheikunde: Multi-scale Modelling of Multiphase Flows)

  • Development of multi-scale models for multiphase flows, including fundamental models of particle and fluid interactions, effective correlations, and continuum models for large scales

  • Validation of these models, using state-of-the-art non-invasive experiments such as particle image velocimetry and digital image analysis

SPI (Scheikunde: (Chemical) Process Intensification)

  • Development of novel integrated reactor concepts, including modelling to obtain a deeper understanding of the reactor concepts and to study their feasibility

  • Demonstration of proof-of-principle, including experimental investigations of the reactor performance using state-of-the-art non-invasive methods
