Crafting Everyday Soft Things

We experience the world through our bodies. In everyday life, this experience is mediated by a range of ‘soft things’ that are in contact with our bodies, such as clothing other textile based products. These soft things not only protect us from our environment but also enable our engagement. At the functional and performative level, a coat regulates our body temperature and movements, at the individual and social level, it shapes how we see and are seen by others and see ourselves.

At the same time digital fabrication technologies and digital data have changed the face of interaction design. Designers are now able to draw on data as a ‘design material’ to create new experiences around and through digital products and services. The projects in this squad explore the intersection of these themes by designing future soft things that leverage data as a design material with the aim of enriching our engagement with the world around us.
