Medical Simulation for Team Training

Research on generating neonatal manikins for training medical teams

For training of medical teams, we do research on generating neonatal manikins which are highly realistic for achieving the so-called “Suspension of Disbelieve”.

Highly realistic concerns visual but also tactical aspects of the manikins. Tactically realistic is for instance needed for training ABC (Airway Breathing and Circulation) interventions.  The manikin should also be physiologically realistic. For instance, if the oxygenation of the blood is low the manikin should automatically show realistic cyanosis symptoms. If the oxygenation levels are restored, the manikin should again automatically restore the visual characteristics of the manikin.

The neonatal manikins are realised using MRI scans, physiological models, microprocessors, sensors, plus advanced Rapid Prototyping - and other manufacturing techniques.
