Course

7Y320 - Building safety

Besides the building codes there is a specific regulation about fire safety. But more important is to get an understanding of the elementary physics behind the regulations. Starting from simple physical models we can already come to practical applicable knowledge for the building design process. Subjects;

  • Risk determination of fire
  • Fire brigade, where can you count on
  • Fire and smoke development in buildings
  • Evacuation, escape routes
  • Heat smoke ventilation system
  • Fire aspects Atria
  • High rise buildings and fire safety

Learning objectives

Every year there is about 1.5 Billion damage by fires in the built environment. Many important buildings are lost because of their fire safety, just remember the Delft faculty building of Architecture! Also yearly around 80 people die, of which nearly half could have been saved if the buildings were design and built according to the latest knowledge and insight about fire safety. Importance is to understand the philosophy behind the Dutch fire safety regulations, laws and standards. This important to realize the design freedom that is intended by the Building Code ( het Bouwbesluit). It enables the designers to come forward with new solutions and apply them as long as they prove that the new solution is at least as safe as the traditional ones. This give the designers new possibilities. After the course the students have gained insight in;

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the fire safety of buildings
  • Knowledge and understanding of the different aspects concerned to fire safety
  • Insight in the application of rules and regulations about fire safety
  • The ability to order, evaluate and apply the different aspects in a design process related to fire safety

Through the analysis of an existing building, all learned knowledge and insights will be applied to come up with suggestions for improvement. Also a design will be made for a heat-smoke ventilation system for a Atrium
