Center for Terahertz Science and Technology Eindhoven

Terahertz (THz) radiation is electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range spanning from 100 GHz to 10 THz. This range, comprised between high-frequency electronics and low-frequency photonics, has remained relatively unexplored for decades due to the lack of efficient sources and compact THz systems. The CTSTe performs research in this exciting field, unveiling new applications and developing THz technology.

Research Profile

The Center for Terahertz Science and Technology Eindhoven is an interdisciplinary research center at Eindhoven University of Technology. We develop integrated terahertz technology, explore applications and perform fundamental research on terahertz surface photonics, ultrafast spectroscopy, layered quantum materials and InP electronics. The CTSTe serves as the catalyst for the growing number of academic and industrial partners exploring and leveraging the vast opportunities of the terahertz field.  Application focus areas comprise THz sensing for agri-food, biomedical diagnosis, industrial and semicon process monitoring, safety and security with THz waves, THz spectroscopy for energy research and THz telecommunication, which is a joint topic with the Center for Wireless Technology.

History

Terahertz activities at TU/e were initiated in 2011 with prof. Marion Matters-Kammerer (Department of Electrical Engineering) at the Center for Wireless Technology Eindhoven (CWTe) focusing on wireless communication. These activities were further expanded in 2015 and 2017, with the moves of the groups of Profs. Jaime Gómez Rivas (Department of Applied Physics) and Idelfonso Tafur Monroy (Department of EE) from AMOLF/Philips and DTU to TU/e. Profs. Gómez Rivas and Tafur Monroy brought their expertise in THz photonics. The recent incorporation in 2020 of Dr. Dook van Mechelen (Department of EE) from ABB, with his broad industrial expertise, makes TU/e the strongest institution in The Netherlands in the fields of THz Science of Technology. With this expanded scope of technology and applications, we now want to take the step of organizing the THz activities in a dedicated Center for Terahertz Science & Technology. On July 14th 2021 the foundation of the CTSTe was announced.
