Advanced Grant Marc Geers
Marc Geers, professor Mechanics of Materials, receives an Advanced Grant worth EUR 2.5 million from the European Research Council (ERC), as the ERC announced last week. With a total of almost 2.5 million, it is one of the largest research grants that an individual researcher can receive.
Prof. Marc Geers and his research group Mechanics of Materials focus on a new, revolutionary method to analyze and predict the mechanical behavior of materials at different length scales ('multi-scale'). This research makes it possible to effectively investigate material behavior in case of damage or cracking of the material.
With this research he hopes to retrieve a new generation of so-called mechanical meta-materials. These meta-materials are very special materials with properties not found in nature. With the multi-scale approach, new types of mechanical meta-materials, so-called non-linear mechanical meta-materials, can be developed. The ultimate goal is to develop a meta-material that can be used to efficiently mute sound.
