8W030 - Numerical analysis of continua I

Contents

As a continuation of the course 8w290, Analysis of Continua, this course focusses on Finite Element Techniques to generate approximate solutions for Biomechanics related problems. First, geometrically and physically linear problems will be discussed. Examples are: heat conduction, diffusion and linear elasticity. Based on these problems the FEM method is introduced. Among others, the weak formulation, discretization and numerical integration techniques are discussed. Formulation of shape functions for triangular and quadrilateral elements. Use of lagrange polynomials and Serendipity elements. the concept of isoparametric elements.

Learning objectives

To teach the student the basics of the Finite Element Method to solve partial differential equations, problems with the Finite Element Method.
