RESEARCH PROFILE

Andrea is an italian PhD student at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in Power & Flow group under the supervision of Prof. Bart Somers. He will be part of the european project IDEALFUEL, whose overall goal is to enable the utilization of lignin from lignocellulosic biomass as maritime fuel in a sustainable manner. In particular, his role will be focused on the fluid dynamics simulations of one of the engines chosen as study subjects. Firstly, he will model the engine in Converge software with WinGD (manifacturer) help, in order to obtain a good checkpoint; after that, he will model the same engine in OpenFoam with another combustion model, FGM, in order to validate it and to make comparisons with experiments. Finally, it will be possible to study the new lignin based fuel implementation, sure of the model reliability.

CFD is wonderful, shows us the incredible variety of fluid dynamics phenomena and allows us to deal with the mystery of Navier-Stokes equations: you can explain everything with them, but no one can solve them.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Andrea got a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Bari (South of Italy), and a master’s degree in Vehicle Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (North of Italy). He developed skills particularly in CFD analysis and simulation, both on external Aerodynamics side (thanks to Formula SAE experience as aerodynamic undertray development manager) and on in-cylinder side (thanks to the master thesis internship on cycle-to-cycle variability in internal combustion engines).
