Self-organization of colloidal particles is a route to new materials with unusual properties. It is fascinating to study this process on the nanometer scale using state-of-the-art techniques.
Andrei Petukhov is a part-time associate professor with the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry at the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. He is also an associate professor at the Van 't Hoff laboratory for Physical and Colloid Chemistry and the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science of Utrecht University (The Netherlands). His scientific interests are mostly related to the self-organization of colloids of various shapes: spheres, cubes, platelets, rods and boards, and complex-shape particles with protrusions. He studies the details of interparticle interactions, the effect of external fields, and confinement effects. A main aspect of his research is the application of synchrotron techniques for colloids, soft matter and advanced nanostructures. This is strongly bound to the SAXS/WAXS station at the DUtch-Belgium BeamLine (DUBBLE) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). In Eindhoven Andrei focuses on interactions with colleagues on the topics of colloid-polymer mixtures and biological soft matter.
Andrei Petukhov studied Physics at Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia) where he obtained his MSc in 1985 and his PhD in 1988. From 1985 until 1993, he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Crystallography (Moscow, Russia). In 1993 Andrei moved to the Institut für Festkörperforschung at Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow. In 1996 he moved to the Netherlands to Radboud University Nijmegen and, in 2000, to Utrecht University, where he currently holds the position of associate professor at the department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry and the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science. In 2016, Andrei was also appointed part-time associate professor at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2017, he was a visiting professor at the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Oxford. Andrei is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the section Advanced Nanomaterials in the MDPI journal Materials, the chairman of a beamtime allocation panel of the European synchrotron ESRF and the chairman of the International Advisory Council of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) in Kaliningrad, Russia.
