Research Profile

Jan Belis is a Full Professor and Chair of Material related Structural Design - Glass Structures in the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology. His key areas of expertise include material characterization, mechanical testing, materials testing, failure analysis, glass construction, research & development and architectural engineering. His main research focus is on structural glass.

Academic Background

Jan Belis holds a PhD degree and an MSc degree in Structural Engineering from Ghent University, Belgium. In addition to his position at the TU/e Structural Design Unit, he is a professor at the Department of Structural Engineering of Ghent University, Belgium. He has been visiting scholar at Delft University of Technology (NL), University of Stuttgart (DE) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (CH).  

Jan is (co)author of over 250 scientific publications and Editor-in-Chief of Glass Structures & Engineering, published by Springer Nature Publishers. He is (co)organiser of several international conferences and Chair of EU COST Action TU0905 ‘Structural glass: Novel design methods and next generation products’. Furthermore, he is co-organiser of several international conferences in this field and is Editor-in-Chief of the Springer journal ‘Glass Structures & Engineering’. Finally, he is Project Team member in charge of the CEN TS (future Eurocode on Structural Glass) and Belgian delegate in CEN TC250 SC11 (Structural Glass).
