RESEARCH PROFILE

Mieke van Marion was born on December 30, 1982. She studied Biomedical Engineered at the Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, the Netherlands. During her studies she did a traineeship at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland, were she investigated the effect of wall compliance on signaling pathways in porcine endothelial cells. In 2006, she graduated on ‘the role of matrix metalloproteinases in collagen remodeling of engineered cardiovascular constructs’. Since February 2007, she is a PhD student in the division Soft Tissue Biomechanics and Engineering. Her research concerned the role of elastin in heart valve functionality. In november 2008 she changed her research focus and now she is working on the development of smart micro-tissues for cardiac regeneration. This project is part of the SmartCare program of BMM.
