Rudi Bekkers

Research Profile

Rudi Bekkers is a Full Professor and Chair of Standardisation and Intellectual Property at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Rudi’s main research interests include: (1) Standardization and intellectual property rights (IPRs) in mobile (3G/UMTS) and other ICT industries, (2) Economics and policy in the area of telecommunications (especially broadband and mobile), (3) University-industry knowledge transfer (‘technology transfer’) and (4) Innovation in network industries.   His work also strongly focuses on on innovation processes in relation to technological environments and Technical standards. In many technology areas, standards determine what a certain technology will look like in the coming decades. That makes standards a strategic topic for many companies and the organizations that try to create or influence these standards, or benefit from them in a different way. Patents are the most important instrument in this area. Research on standards and patents is carried out for the European Commission, the American National Academies of Science, and also for various companies and standardization bodies.
