Bust of the physicist Van der Waals 1999
Location: Cascade building, floor 1
Subject of this bust is the great physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals (1837-1923). The sculpture bears a strong focus on the past, as this was the way great men and women were commemorated in bronze in centuries gone by. Should the artist represent just what the man looked like, or may her work also express spiritual strength? How do you bring to life in bronze a man whom you have never met? Such assignments are certainly not the easiest for artists, but Inez Hegeman (1945) without doubt achieved a convincing result
The Van der Waals Student Association offered the sculpture to the TU/e department of Chemical Engineering on the occasion of the opening of the new Cascade building in 2000.
