Designing better business models for rural electrification

This research project, carried out by Innovation Sciences graduate student Rodrigo González Lopez, aims to pinpoint the opportunities and barriers for the diffusion of electricity through profitable business models in rural Uganda. The fieldwork for this project was carried out in western Uganda with FRES, a social enterprise focused on providing solar electricity solutions in Uganda with a fee-for-service model. The findings of this research show that it is important to tailor business models for rural electrification to the local context, by taking into account user experiences, preferences and perceptions.
